It's that time of year
Last year I opened the door to let my girls in after their last potty break for the day. I noticed that they came in totally different than usual---They made a path to the house and scooted in next to the house. They also kept looking over to the mat that they come in on. I looked down, and to my amazement there was a copperhead snake. I was, of course, terrified. I called my son-in-law, and he was able to kill the snake. After getting rid of the snake, I went in and noticed that all three Westies were acting a little strange. Then I noticed it. A spot on the top of Belle's snout where she was bitten. It was beginning to swell and she wouldn't let me touch it. Treasure and Olivia both had places on their faces also. Of course, I called the vet and gave them Benedryl and pretty much watched them all night. They passed the night without problems, although they all seemed to be in pain. The year before there was also a copperhead on the mat in front of my door at night. The girls didn't get bit by that one. A few days prior to that, my daughter's Husky was bitten by a snake in the back of our house. Glacier had to go to the vet and had a very difficult night. She did recover, but it took a couple of days for her to get back to normal.
So now I am always very cautious about going out at night without shoes, and I always try to watch where I am walking in the summer. I think the girls saw the snake and tried to play with it. Well, they sure did get a surprise. I notice now that they are a little more cautious when they look at something on the ground. Olivia, especially, is more cautious, and you can see her jerk her head back if she isn't sure of what it is.
